Focus On:

Career Readiness

The most immediate source of new talent for our workforce is our K-12 School System. Schools incorporate career awareness, exposure, exploration and experience as a vital part of their curriculum. This includes opportunities to complete dual-credit college courses during high school. The Career Readiness Focus Area convenes schools, businesses, and community partners to provide deep and meaningful experiences that enable students to explore a wide spectrum of careers.
The goals of the focus area are:

1. Career Interests and Aptitudes:

Understanding their aptitudes and how those relate to careers are important first steps for students. Many school districts administer YouScience, an aptitude assessment tool. In Northern Kentucky, YouScience results are shared as a comprehensive region in partnership with participating schools and NaviGo, a career and college prep organization of Learning Grove. The Career Readiness team helps schools as they provide youth with information about the alignment of their interests and aptitudes with potential careers.

Many students may have high aptitudes for careers they do not even know exist.

YouScience and other tools help students to learn about their strengths and talents thereby reducing a career-exposure gap.

2. Work-Based Learning (WBL) Opportunities:

For many students, seeing jobs first-hand enables them to find their career passions.

Career Readiness also champions hands-on learning, in which students can experience jobs onsite. Ranging from company tours to job shadowing to paid co-operative assignments, students and their families can find local opportunities posted by local businesses through the MyCareerE3 network. Support and funding for MyCareerE3 is currently provided through partnership with NaviGo.

3. College Connections & Dual Credit:

Through dual credit courses, students can complete general-education requirements or even an associate degree.

Northern Kentucky students have numerous opportunities to earn college credit during high school through dual-credit opportunities. By earning dual-credit, students can shorten the time and expense involved in credential attainment while proving to themselves they can be successful in college-level coursework. The Career Readiness team champions and promotes these opportunities.
